This should resolve any questions you have regarding the death of Blain (Jesse Ventura). The PREDATOR novelization written by Paul Monette(first pressing May 1987) explains the death in greater detail. The novel was based on Jim Thomas"s and John Thomas"s original script, and therefore was about the original creature and it"s origins (think of the alien from JOHN CARPENTER"S THE THING meets the T-1000 from TERMINATOR 2 in terms of concept). The script/story was not about the intergalactic trophy hunter we all know. It was a different creature, however it was very similiar in terms of style, but not look and abilities. What had happened was the creature threw a spear into the side of Blain"s neck. The original creature was able to "materialize" weapons such as spears for it"s own killing purposes. Pause the DVD on the frame where Blain is "struck" You can cleary see a small spear composited over the film, It disappears (representing the point of impact moment into the side of his neck) and EITHER someone off screen throws some "fake guts" against his neck OR a air-gun of some type "fires" out the fake guts onto his neck. The sound effect used adds the "feel" of impact. The original creature suit and concept were "thrown away" and a new one was created. So in order to match continuity in that scene an electrical effect was put over the spear to make it appear that it was a blast from the Predator"s shoulder cannon.

Welcome aboard NightMare, I hope to see you in this forum very frequently and enjoying the comments from the guys. Nice to meet you.

Saludos!
